Estate of the artist
The inspiration for this painting was the artist's recollection of the marching bands in the South. The Hillside High School Marching Band, was the pride of Durham, North Carolina, and where Barnes attended school as a student-athlete.

He recalled: "The painting shows the intersection of Pettigrew Street and Roxboro Road in Durham, where I used to experience the band turn from downtown and into the Black business and residential community. The energy changed. The fast-paced, high-steppin'?, soul-driven cadence of the drums made everybody feel good and they moved in sync with the music. The young, the old, crippled and decrepit, all vibrated inside with joy."
